We live in interesting times, don't we? We already have glimpses of a overwhelmingly digitized future (overwhelming as in most things will be digital &/or it's all too much...). As educators, can you afford to ignore digital literacy? On the other hand, are we losing sight of the forest - getting swept up by gimmickry and forgetting some fundamental rules of learning? Question, questions! instead of comments :)
I think that a lot more research needs to be done into Digital Literacy. Is there an actual definiton for Digital Literacy? I think that everywhere you turn and a lot of what we experience in our daily lives presents us with the opportunity to be digitally literate. Keep up the research. It seems that in the 21st Century the word literacy encompasses so much more than just simply surfing the net. I think this is an area that needs to be researched further!
Digita Lit. is extremely important, especially today in 2010. Kids are consistently engaging in digital communication and must be educated in schools to become digitally literate. kids are always texting and and playing games on Wii or, surfing the net. However, are we teaching our kids to be critical thinkers when it comes to these things, like where they are getting there info. from on the internet? I think this is an area that needs to be adopted into our schools curriculum. Love your site!
Overshadowed by this important discussion of literacy in the digital age, is teaching students the underpinnings of the technology that supports the 'digital' environment. How many learn what a bit or byte is? How many are taught the concepts of the binary system that enables the infrastructure of the digital world. Sure literacy in this area is important, but they all need to know it starts as a world of 0 and 1.
Kids are and will be increasingly digital literate. They learn to navigate the internet, and use electronic technology because the payoff is access to social circles, entertainment, immediate and easy to access information and many other reasons only they can come up with. I think we should be teaching kids to use and understand digital technology in the same way that we would teach them to use a slide rule when it was the newest technology or a calculator when it became prevalent. And what about the kids who don't have access to the internet, or computers, or the latest technology and find themselves left out.
